Jake
When I started working at WDAZ in the early 90′s one of the first assignments I ever had was going over to Hyslop to do interviews with the Sioux basketball team. That team included Scott Guldseth, David Robertson, Chris Gardner, Steve McAndrew and a few others. Characters, for sure. Every one of them. But the most quiet guy in the group was the guy they all looked to for the answers, for the final word on any of their discussions: Ben Jacobson. He was wise beyond his college-aged years, a point guard on the court and off. He was the guy that held this close group together. For those of you that remember Robertson, you will recall that he was basically insane. But "Jake" was always there to reel him back in. Jake did that for everyone. And that’s why it should come as no surprise that he’s leading his Northern Iowa basketball team deep into the NCAA Tourney. It would be too easy to call Jake an overnight success, which I’m sure the national media will start doing today. But those who have followed his coaching career closely know that’s not the case. He’s toiled for many years at the crazy profession of coaching.
I’m not in the habit of befriending everyone I cover, it wouldn’t make sense. But it did when I met Ben in the early 90′s and he remains a good friend today. His team’s upset of Kansas yesterday won’t change him one bit. And that’s the best part of Jake. When I finish this blog, I will send him a congratulatory e-mail. And true to his character, he will reply a short time later with a nice note. He’s an easy guy to root for. Always has been, always will.
